Many of the cast iron buildings in New York City, stand in SoHo. Cast iron facades were produced in a factory and shipped to the building site which made them cheaper to produce than stone or brick and also much faster to build. As factories abandoned these cast iron buildings in the 1960s they were replaced by artists who repurposed the spaces as sun-filled studios.
